James Turrell is considered the Master of Light. He created one of his famous Shallow Space Constructions for Swarovski Kristallwelten.
Guests feel and experience the light and colors with all of their senses as they move through “Umbra.” You’ll learn one of the most important things about Swarovski crystals in this atmospheric light installation – light.
What would crystal be without the light that helps it shine? The very facet that ignites its magic, brilliance, and perfection? You’ll experience the soul of crystal in this Chamber of Wonder. This is currently the only permanent installation of its type in the German-speaking world.
James Turrell was born in Los Angeles, USA in 1943 and is one of the most well-known figures on the international art scene. Turrell has experimented with natural and artificial sources of light in his works over the last 50 years. He creates rooms of light in his installations in which light becomes visually perceptible.
Turrell’s installations are a testament to the artist’s ingenious way of playing with perception – architectural features almost completely disappear thanks to his creative use of light. Even an ordinary corner of a room can become a stage for the interplay of colors, space, and flat surfaces.
Turrell received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1968. The artist has since received more than 20 awards, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1984), the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government (1991), as well as the National Medal of Arts by US President Barack Obama (2014). Turrell’s works feature in more than 70 international art collections.
