Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto, Japan in 1929. She studied in Kyoto and at the Art Students League of New York. Over the course of her career, she has worked with leading luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton.
The artist has been exploring and refining the concept of mirror rooms since 1965. She created the Infinity Mirror Room – Phalli’s Field around this time, the prototype for a room with walls covered in mirrors that endlessly reflect the floor and ceiling.

Yayoi Kusama, one of the most important post-war artists in Japan, showcases one of her most spectacular mirror installations “Chandelier of Grief” in Wattens. A Swarovski crystal chandelier takes center stage in this installation, spinning at the center of a mirrored room.
Chandelier of Grief
Poem by Yayoi Kusama
I don’t know why, but there’s always an abyss before the pain
The bright light sparkles
And penetrates deep into my heart
My body becomes a chandelier
that gently surrounds the shimmering wounds
I go on, until the heavens are no longer there
Gently cradling my damaged heart
For an eternity
As long as I am alive, I want to live
As long as I am alive, I want to live
