Renowned Berlin light artist Susanne Rottenbacher created her installation Lily Pond for the Swarovski Kristallwelten Store Innsbruck. The installation has adorned the two-story store’s interior space since September 2019. The artist plays with the historic building’s depth, using reflections in the window niches to bring a feeling of movement to her static light sculpture. “People want to explore sensuality, and the light is meant to guide them,” Susanne Rottenbacher says as she describes the reaction she hopes the installation provokes in visitors. The landscape depicts five water lilies with crystalline leaves and pastel-colored tendrils and contains 800,000 Swarovski crystals. It reaches up toward the sky near the entrance of the two-story Swarovski Kristallwelten Store Innsbruck. While a vertical water lily pond may seem slightly unusual, the Berlin-based light artist has a clever reason for doing this: “Instead of using a smooth wall, I embraced the interior facade’s irregularities and the reflections in the window niches when designing and creating the water landscape.” Susanne Rottenbacher handles the building’s history with care, adding a new facet with her light installation. The water lily pond was inspired by the Gasthaus Goldene Rose, the restaurant that stood at the store’s location on the Herzog-Friedrich-Straße until 1985. The light artist creates a landscape using five water lilies – “the majestic queen of roses” – that suggests movement despite being completely still.
