Lake of Shimmer draws visitors’ attention immediately as they enter the store. The installation was designed by Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka and crafted by Swarovski, connecting the store’s three levels. The expansive 88-square-meter silver surface is made up of 16,016 miniature mirrors. The mirrors continuously move and reflect the light, giving the installation the feeling of light playing with the crystal or light reflecting off the surface of a lake. The movement experienced in Lake of Shimmer is carefully choreographed, each mirror is controlled individually – like pixels on a screen – allowing for an infinite range of motifs and movement patterns.
Tokujin Yoshioka, born in Saga, Japan in 1967, is known for his sophisticated yet minimalist approach that’s often compared to the aesthetics of Japanese cuisine. He works with innovative materials and technologies that are often reflective or transparent to create a futuristic effect.
Yoshioka has gained traction thanks to his technically precise work and targeted use of light. One of his best-known works, the Honey-Pop armchair, is made using only white paper. His installations are now widely regarded not just as design objects, but as works of art.
After working with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, he founded his own studio, Tokujin Yoshioka Design, in 2000. His works have received many awards and are featured in permanent collections at major museums around the world.
